We already know that there is ample research proving that patients with periodontal disease are at increased risk of many health complications, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, dementia, and even low-birthweight babies. Now, a new study from the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) that followed 568 patients diagnosed with Covid-19 from February 2020 to July 2020, suggests that there are worse outcomes for patients who have periodontal disease.
The study finds that patients with periodontal disease:
- Have 3.5 times more risk of landing in the ICU when hospitalized.
- Have 4.5 times greater chance of needing a ventilator to breathe.
- Have a 9 times greater probability of death due to Covid-19.
The report suggests that inflammation in the oral cavity, caused by periodontal disease, may allow the coronavirus to make more of a negative impact on patients.
These findings emphasize the importance of oral care to reduce the risk for severe Covid-19 outcomes.
Now more than ever, it’s vitally important to take care of your oral health due to this global health pandemic.
