Many of our patients have questions about their oral health and ask about the appropriate amount of times to brush their teeth each day.
The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth for 2 minutes a day at least twice per day. Some prefer to do a midday brush to freshen-up after a meal. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing to do as long as you are not brushing too extensively or too hard, ultimately damaging your tooth enamel and gums.
However, be aware that brushing immediately after eating acidic foods or drinks should be avoided because the acids soften the teeth and further increase the risk of abrasion.
We recommend a soft-bristled brush because it provides substantial cleaning results while still keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Be sure to switch to a new brush every 6 months or sooner depending on how often you brush throughout the day. Electric toothbrushes are also a great option. Ask us for brand recommendations.
