What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are known as indirect restorations. Unlike traditional fillings, which are molded directly into the tooth during your visit, inlays and onlays are fabricated outside the mouth—typically in a dental lab—then bonded into place.

• Inlays fit inside the tooth’s biting surface, between the cusps. They’re used when decay or damage doesn’t extend to the edges of the tooth.
• Onlays cover one or more cusps of the tooth and are used when the damage is more extensive but still doesn’t require a full crown.

Both options are made from high-strength ceramic, porcelain, or composite resin for excellent durability and a natural appearance.
